Lac des Sables

Lac des Sables is essential to the ecological, economic and social life of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts

The Importance of Lac des Sables

The general health of Lac des Sables is of concern. Although the various indicators are still within the standards, they are dangerously close to levels indicating that the Lake may be in danger.

If we do not maintain current levels, the loss of the Lake would be a real ecological disaster.

The lake ages every year and the aquatic plants are constantly growing. It is important to slow down this aging significantly. We’re running out of time!

Economic and tourism engine

A portion of the income of a significant number of residents of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts comes from activities related to Lac des Sables: restaurants, hotels, shops, etc. Tourists and second home owners travel to the area to enjoy the Lake. If they can no longer navigate, fish or swim there, the number of customers may decrease, affecting the profitability of businesses.

Property value and municipal budget

Residences near the Lake represent high property values because of their location. Once again, if the lake becomes “unusable”, the value of the properties will have to be revised downwards. Although this is a loss to the residents themselves, the entire community will suffer as this would inevitably have an impact on the municipality’s budget.

There is a direct link between the health of the lake and the property value of these residences. Any reduction in property values will result in a reduction in municipal taxes and, consequently, an increase in taxes for all taxpayers.

Four main areas of action

APELS, thanks to the scientific studies it commissioned, was able to define four main lines of action for the protection of the lake.
Prevent storm sewers from spilling directly into the lake.
Minimize shoreline erosion.
Prevent nutrients from entering the lake.
Minimize the impact of boats on erosion and sediment agitation.
